A good buy

This machine is amazing, milk micro foam is an easy task with the 6bar steamer and the pressure gage is very helpful in determining the right dosage and grind size to pull the perfect shot. This machine doesn't steam and make espresso in the same time, don't know why Krups chosen not to enable that feature.

Solid machine with high learning curve

I want to preface my review by saying that I have been making espresso for about 15 years. I own a La Pavoni Europiccola manual machine and a La Pavoni Jolly grinder. I set those aside about three years ago, because I didn't have time to make espresso in the morning before work. I then went through a number of super-automatic machines, which all broke down in different ways, and finally decided to try an automatic machine. I purchased this Krups used, from Amazon Warehouse deals. It came in the original box, with all of the accessories, and does not appear to have been used much, if any. I paid less than half of what a new machine sells for on Amazon. However, my machine did not come with a factory warranty, so I am taking a gamble in that regard.The Krups XP618050 is the exact same machine as the Sunbeam EM6910 which has been sold in Australia for several years. There are many, mostly positive, reviews of the Sunbeam EM6910 on YouTube. This espresso machine features separate stainless steel lined thermoblocks and pumps for the brew head and milk steamer; an actively headed, electronically temperature controlled commercial size brew head; and, a three liter water tank with a very large drip tray. This Krups XP618050 also comes with a brew pressure gauge and the choice between single, double or manual volume controls.For some unknown reason, the Krups XP618050 comes with pressurized filter baskets, whereas the Sunbeam appears to include both types for the Australian market. I was on the verge of returning the machine because I could not get a good result with the pressurized filter baskets and became tired of wasting coffee. The Krups distributor in the U.S. was most unhelpful and basically ignorant. The person I spoke with didn't even know what a filter basket was, much less the difference between a pressurized and unpressurized basket. Fortunately, the XP618050 uses a 58mm filter holder; and I took a chance and ordered standard commercial filter baskets from an espresso supply store on the internet. The baskets, including a 21 gram triple, fit the filter holder perfectly. The cost of the new baskets was around $7 each.This Krups is very sensitive to the coffee grind, quantity, and tamp. At first, I thought there was something wrong with the machine because only a tiny amount of coffee came out and the pressure gauge pegged to the red. It turned out that I had ground the coffee beans too fine; they were set for the La Pavoini. I made the grind a little less fine, measured 14 grams of ground coffee for the double basket, and tamped to 30 lbs.The result is that the pressure, as shown by the gauge is around 12 o'clock and the coffee is neither bitter or sour. The crema is decent, but not what I would call award winning. I attribute the latter to my beans not being as fresh as they should be. I plan to try again with fresh roasted beans and see the result.Another odd thing about the machine is that the pre-defined volume for the single shot was 75ml and 150 for the double shot. There is a programming feature for the machine and I re-set the water volume so that a single shot comes out as 30ml and a double as 60. Most of the time I use the manual feature and just stop the water flow once the brewed coffee turns blonde.The milk steaming feature is very fast and there is more than enough dry steam. The machine comes with a frothing accessory, but I don't like it as I prefer to control my own frothing and the frothing accessory is just one more thing to clean. There is a feature to slow down the speed of the milk pump, which produces an even drier steam, and I plan on experimenting with that as well.Overall, the jury is still out. I have a couple of more weeks to make up my mind if I want to keep or return this Krups XP618050. Right now, I am leaning towards keeping it. I will provide another update later.
