OK, over the years I've gone through the $150 "espresso machines", then a $500 one, a $1,200 one and then this one. Each machine was among the best in its class and attainable within my budgets at the time. I roast my own beans, have an excellent grinder(Mazzer Mini) and strive for espresso perfection. This machine is in my opinion the best until you get to the $5,000+ range. Before you buy, be aware that you will need the hard-wired drain setup and probably an adapter plug. You will also want to get a naked portafilter (with the spouts cut off), one of the aftermarket smaller-hole frothing tips and a great tamper. Ah yes, and don't skimp on the grinder. Get a burr grinder - decent ones can be had for $400 or more. Now you're ready. Well, not really though. Invest in a home roaster. It turns out to be a necessity. The cost of unroasted beans is a fraction of the roasted cost and will pay for itself very quickly. This machine has preinfusion (which really really helps) of the grounds, allows you to adjust two parameters of water temp (boiler and grouphead) and of course allows you to program the shots for one-push espresso extraction. You will find that the shots are as good as nearly all high end coffee shops, but alas not nearly as awesome as the ones with the machines costing tens of thousands of dollars. 4 stars for very slightly cheaper construction that I would expect for the price, but really a solid machine overall. In the end, if you get this you will be able to realistically achieve anything you want (with a grinder and roaster) in espresso. Milk frothing takes a bit of a learning curve due to the high steam power and short window of time before "done" comes, but with the smaller hole tip and a little practice, it becomes effortless. Experiment with different types of milk (whole or low fat ... no skim, ick)because some will simply to permit microfoam. While the cost will hurt for most of us, all of these investments in grinders, roasters, beans and accessories will pay off in 9 months or less if you, like me, make 2 a day for yourself and your wife.
